Gin is certainly enjoying a renaissance. Many major city centres now have a dedicated gin bar (or two). England’s smallest city, Wells was very deserving of a gin bar, so the hotel now stocks over 100 varieties.
Gin has been around for centuries. For many years it was drunk for its alleged medicinal purposes; a cheap cure for ills such as grout, indigestion and malaria! Today, bottled gin comes in all shapes and sizes and can be flavoured with hints of different herbs, fruits and spices.
Gin Bar Menu
Our bar stocks a wide range from traditional gins to the more adventurous. Therefore all palates are catered for. If you know little about gin, fear not. Our gin menu features helpful tasting notes and a list of complementary tonics and garnishes. You could start off at ‘Death’s Door’ and end up on the ‘Portobello Road’ with ‘Sir Robin of Loxley’ (but please drink responsibly).
One of our most popular gins is Bathtub Gin. This is an extraordinary award-winning gin from Ableforth. It is made using the traditional method of cold compounding (or in layman’s terms – infusing). Very high-quality copper pot-still spirit is infused with ingredients including juniper, orange peel, coriander, cassia, cloves and cardamom, with the length of the compounding period controlled entirely by periodic sampling. The result is an extraordinary gin, lightly tinted by the botanicals, and with a flavour that is both bold and perfumed all at once.
Sit back in our bar or lounge with a refreshing Gin & Tonic and enjoy the taste of your tipple with a lovely view of the stunning West Front of Wells Cathedral. During the summer months, you can drink in the great outdoors on Swan Terrace. And if that gin and tonic has whetted your appetite why not enjoy dinner in our award-winning restaurant, 15C A.D.
